Birth Doesn't Have to Feel Scary: Is Hiring a Doula Worth It for Manitoba Families?
Pregnancy comes with countless decisions. Where will you give birth? What care provider is right for you? Should you take a birth class? Somewhere along the way, you may find yourself asking:
Is hiring a doula really worth it?
Maybe you've heard amazing things about doulas from friends. Maybe you've seen the word all over social media but aren't entirely sure what a doula actually does. Or maybe you've wondered if hiring a doula is simply an extra expense that isn't truly necessary.
As a birth doula serving families throughout Manitoba, I believe every family deserves to make informed decisions about their pregnancy and birth experience. So let's take an honest look at what doulas do, what the research says, and whether hiring a doula might be worth it for your family.
At Fearless Birth MB, I'm currently accepting in-person clients in Winnipeg, Selkirk, Stonewall, Teulon, Stony Mountain, Warren, Woodlands, Headingley, and surrounding communities.
What Does a Doula Actually Do?
A doula is a trained professional who provides non-medical support during pregnancy, labour, birth, and the early postpartum period.
I do not perform medical tasks, diagnose conditions, or make decisions for you. I don't replace your doctor, midwife, or nurse. Instead, my role is to provide education, support, and continuous care throughout your pregnancy and birth experience.
Depending on your needs, my support may include:
Evidence-based birth education
Helping you understand your options and make informed decisions
Assisting with creating a birth plan that reflects your preferences
Teaching comfort measures and coping techniques for labour
Providing emotional support throughout pregnancy and birth
Supporting your partner so they feel confident and involved
Offering continuous support during labour and birth
Helping you process your birth experience afterward
Simply put, my entire role is to support you.
Birth Doesn't Have to Feel Scary
For many of us, our understanding of birth comes from television, movies, and dramatic stories we've heard from others. Birth is often portrayed as chaotic, terrifying, and something that simply happens to you.
It's no wonder so many people enter pregnancy feeling anxious or fearful.
One of the things I love most about being a doula is helping families shift their mindset around birth.
That doesn't mean pretending birth is easy or promising that everything will go according to plan. Birth is unpredictable, and it can be intense, challenging, and require flexibility.
But birth also shouldn’t be approached from a place of fear.
When you understand how labour works, learn about your options, and feel supported in your decisions, birth often feels less scary and more manageable. Instead of wondering what's happening to you, you begin to understand what's happening and how to navigate it.
My goal isn't to help you have a "perfect" birth. It's to help you approach birth feeling informed, supported, and confident in your ability to navigate whatever your experience may look like.
Why Birth Education Matters During Pregnancy
One of the biggest misconceptions about doulas is that we're only there during labour.
In reality, much of my work happens long before contractions ever begin.
Pregnancy often comes with an overwhelming amount of information. You're hearing stories from friends and family, scrolling through social media, reading articles online, and attending prenatal appointments that may leave you with more questions than answers.
Birth education helps cut through the noise.
Understanding how labour works, what interventions are available, and what your options are can make an enormous difference in how you feel going into birth.
Birth education is a huge part of how I support my doula clients. That's why I include access to Unmedicated Academy, a comprehensive online childbirth education program that families can work through at their own pace. The curriculum covers topics like how labour works, comfort measures, common interventions, informed decision-making, birth planning, partner support, and postpartum preparation.
I love combining self-paced education with personalized doula support because learning the information is only one piece of the puzzle. Having someone to discuss your questions with and help you apply that knowledge to your own pregnancy and birth experience can make all the difference.
Education doesn't make birth predictable. Birth will always have unknowns. But education can help you approach those unknowns with confidence instead of fear.
When you understand what's happening and why, you're often better equipped to ask questions, make informed decisions, and feel like an active participant in your birth experience rather than simply going along with whatever happens around you.
The Benefits of Continuous Labour Support
Labour can be intense, unpredictable, and sometimes overwhelming.
One of the unique things about having a doula is continuous support.
Nurses can provide incredible care, but they are often caring for multiple families at once and may change shifts during your labour. Your doctor or midwife may only be present for portions of your labour and birth.
As your doula, my focus remains on you.
I stay by your side, offering encouragement, helping you navigate decisions, suggesting comfort measures, reminding you of your preferences, and supporting both you and your partner throughout the experience.
Sometimes support looks like helping you find a more comfortable position. Sometimes it's helping your partner feel more confident. Sometimes it's simply being a calm, reassuring presence when things feel overwhelming.
What Does the Research Say About Doulas?
One of the reasons I became a doula is because the research on continuous support during labour is so compelling.
Research has found that women who receive continuous labour support are more likely to:
Have a spontaneous vaginal birth
Have lower rates of cesarean birth
Have shorter labours
Use fewer pain medications
Report greater satisfaction with their birth experience
Have more positive feelings about their birth
Of course, no one can guarantee a specific birth outcome. Birth is inherently unpredictable, but having knowledgeable, continuous support can have a meaningful impact on how supported, informed, and empowered you feel throughout your pregnancy and birth.
Why I Became a Doula
Birth is often portrayed as something to fear.
During my own pregnancies, I was considered "high risk" because I have Type 1 diabetes. I was frequently reminded of the interventions I might need and the reasons I should be worried.
But my experience showed me that pregnancy and birth don't have to be approached from a place of fear.
I had two spontaneous, uncomplicated births and discovered firsthand how powerful education, support, and informed decision-making can be.
That's what led me to become a doula.
I want families to feel informed, supported, and confident as they navigate pregnancy and birth, whatever their birth preferences may be.
Is Hiring a Doula Worth the Cost?
This is probably the question I hear most often and honestly, it's a fair question.
Hiring a doula is an investment, but you're not simply paying someone to show up on the day your baby is born.
You're investing in:
Personalized education
Ongoing support throughout pregnancy
A space to ask questions without feeling rushed
Help understanding your options
Guidance as you create your birth preferences
Continuous support during labour
Support for your partner
Someone whose entire focus is supporting you
For many families, the value isn't necessarily having a specific type of birth. It's knowing they don't have to navigate pregnancy and birth alone.
So, Is Hiring a Doula Worth It?
The honest answer is: it depends on what matters most to you.
If your goal is simply to get through labour and birth, then you may decide that a doula isn't necessary.
If you want to go into birth feeling educated, informed, supported, and confident in your decisions, many families find that having a doula is one of the most valuable investments they make during pregnancy.
Birth isn't just another medical appointment.
It's a major life event.
Having someone by your side whose entire role is to support, educate, and encourage you can make a meaningful difference in how you experience it.
If you're pregnant and wondering whether doula support is right for your family, I'd love to connect.
